What’s holding you back? Your hard work is paying off. You are doing well in your field. But there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. Perhaps one small flaw–a behavior you barely even recognize–is the only thing that’s keeping you from where you want to be.
Who can help? Marshall Goldsmith is an expert at helping global leaders overcome their sometimes unconscious annoying habits and attain a higher level of success. His one-on-one coaching comes with a six-figure price tag. But, in this audiobook, you get Marshall’s great advice without the hefty fee!
What is the solution? The Harvard Business Review asked Goldsmith, “What is the most common problem faced by the executives that you coach?” Inside, he answers this question by discussing not only the key beliefs of successful leaders, but also the behaviors that hold them back. He addresses the fundamental problems that often come with success–and offers ways to attack these problems. Goldsmith outlines twenty habits commonly found in the corporate environment and provides a systematic approach to helping you achieve a positive change in behavior.
Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter’s belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book—such as learning to listen or letting go of the past—his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g., $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime.
While Goldsmith’s advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. (Jan. 2)

When I first bought this book several years ago, I started reading it, enjoyed it, put it down a little more than half-way through – and then life got in the way.
Having picked it up recently for a thorough re-read (and being in a very different place in my career, business, and life!) I can tell you that this book is a profound piece of self-improvement.
For successful people who can’t see their own obstacles (ie ALL of us!), this video review will show you exactly WHY Marshall’s book deserves a place in YOUR executive library and why you’ll dog-ear, post-it-note, and mark it up like a madman like I did.
Very, very good personal improvement book. I thought this was going to be about business recruiting and management, and it was so much more useful. This will be another book to read, and reread.
“So much of our stress (in life & business) and conflict could be avoided if we simply followed the advice in the title above. This was one of the really outstanding points in this book that I can benefit from. The author has the experience, stories and track record helping successful people implement positive change in their behavior and now, you and & I can apply the same learning. stopped me in my tracks.)
While the examples of Goldsmith’s work focus on his success with “”high-powered”” CEO’s and corporate leaders, the principles are applicable to all (humans) regardless of career or social status. I recommend this book highly and believe that more and more insight will be gleaned from subsequent re-reading. So go get it, read it, study it, re-read it, use it. If in doubt, refer to rule #8 above.”
“If you are looking for some good, practical advice on how to be more successful, this is a good place to start.
Marshall Goldsmith, author of What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, is one of the world’s foremost thought leaders on executive coaching and what it takes to become successful.
Mr. Goldsmith writes in a very conversational style. He has a wealth of experience in working with some of the most successful people in the world. He has brought his experiences together and shares a number of success stories. He cites numerous examples of how his ideas have been used to great success in business and life.
“One of those books on communication, behavior, etiquette, and leadership that made me realize I’m a terrible human being I have a lot to learn. I’m guilty of so many of the “”bad”” behaviors in the book that I felt almost personally attacked. At least I’m aware of this now and can start to change.
The key argument in the book is that it’s behavior, not technical skills, that separate the great from everyone else, and this book details a number of behavioral changes you can make to be more successful.
Marshall Goldsmith shares his insights on how the habits you’ve gained so far, which are often the habits that have brought you this success in your career, are now the same habits that are now delaying your progress. You will learn that you are actually succeeding in spite of these habits, not because of them. With Marshall’s systematic approach you will gain the clarity to free yourself from those habits that are not necessarily serving you on your path anymore. You will learn by making minor conscious adjustments you can take yourself to the next level.
